Upcoming Events at Soule:

April 20th, 2024 – Early Earth Day Celebrations

Earth Day Clean Up! Help us get the farm ready for the summer with this community clean up day at Soule. We are looking for volunteers of all ages to help lend a hand. Come for an hour or the entire time. We need help cleaning up leaves, cleaning up the children’s garden, invasive species eradication, weeding, weed whacking, enclosure clean up, tidying, and generally sprucing up the farm.

All ages are welcome; any young children must be accompanied by an adult. Teens are welcome to volunteer for graduation or club requirements. If they will be dropped off without an adult present they MUST email volunteer@soulehomestead.org to fill out our required teen volunteer paperwork.

We recommend all volunteers bring water, a hat, gloves if possible, and a snack. Dress for the weather! Got an extra rake at home you can bring? Awesome. A weed whacker you can use? Super! Handy with a hammer? We have a job for that! Let us know if you have something else you want to bring if you think it would be helpful.

As always we truly appreciate our tremendous volunteers at Soule! We love our community and always love seeing people here to relax or to lend a hand.

From Neighborhood Forrest:

We love trees! We want to give every child the priceless joy of planting and watching trees grow. By doing so, we will beautify our neighborhoods, put a significant dent in our carbon footprint, and help instill in the hearts of our little ones a sense of magic, wonder, and love for our planet.

Pick up will be on Saturday, April 20th 10am – noon in the barn.

Join Entomologist Extension Educator Blake Dinius for a fun nature walk around Soule Homestead and learn all about local butterfly species. Join us on our adventure as we explore the world of butterflies!

With names like “satyr,” “monarch,” and “nymph” butterflies evoke fantastical imagery of small
mythical creatures flitting about. Butterflies have amazed people for centuries. Watching butterflies can be a peaceful way to both get exercise and connect with nature. How many butterflies can you name? There are over 100 species of butterflies in Massachusetts.

Note: This will be a casual, slow-paced walk with an emphasis on identification and observation. Participants are encouraged to wear walking/hiking shoes and to wear bug spray.

Coming this fall…. Basic Birding

  • Event time: 9am – 10:30
  • Event cost: $10 members, $15 non-members
  • Workshop location: TBD

Are you interested in birding but don’t really know where to start? Or maybe you have started, but want to know a bit about how to expand your abilities and learn a bit more about visual (and aural) bird identification? Join us for this birding basics class and discover how easy it is to get involved in this outdoor hobby. Start your life list, meet some other people who are excited about birds and enjoy some time outdoors at the Homestead. This class will include learning how to use the Cornell Laboratories “Merlin” and eBird applications as well as a quick introduction to binocular lesson.

To be RESCHEDULED!– Stargazing Night Walk

  • Event start time: 7:00pm
  • Event price: $10 adults/$5 child – members, $15 adult/$10 child non-members
  • Workshop location: Parking and meeting near goats.

Join us at Soule for a family night of stargazing to remember. Bridgewater State University’s Observation Manager Jamie Kern will take us on a walk down the farm road to the back fields to experience the stars and planets visible here Soule. We will discuss planets, the galaxies, and distant stars. After our adventure we will come back to enjoy stargazing with our telescopes in the fields just behind the classroom. Weather permitting (keeping burn safety in mind) we will have a bonfire and s’mores kits for purchase. We recommend all visitors use bug spray liberally (this is an organic farm) and bring a flashlight to guide your way with the group to the back field.
